Abstract: | My field of specialization or area of research was ordered by God, who showed me how humanity has been blinded by its need for energy and not see the havoc this quest is creating on the earth’s ecosystem. The consequential fuel depletions and climate changes have forced humanity to an energy crisis. This has revealed the urgency for seeking alternative sources to quench the ever growing demand for energy. Mr Vice-Chancellor Sir, distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, I stand before you therefore, to present my Inaugural Lecture, titled:
“Renewable Energy and Natural Refrigerants: the Veritable Tools for Solving the Major Global Environmental Problems”. |
Description: | The energy system is presently facing various challenges, most especially high consumption levels, inadequate energy availability and environmental concerns such as air pollution, ozone depletion, global warming and climate change (Oni and Bolaji, 2011). Energy can generally be classified into two: renewable and non-renewable. Non-renewable energy sources are not capable of being replenished or are replenished slowly. These include: nuclear fuels (such as uranium) and fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum and natural gas). Renewable energy sources are those that are naturally replaced in an unceasing manner. They are also called Clean Energy, or Green Energy, as they do not discharge carbon dioxide (CO2) or other greenhouse gases. These include: solar, wind and water, which are inexhaustible and also other forms of organic materials that can be converted into gaseous or liquid fuels by thermo-chemical or biological processes (Bolaji, 2003; Bolaji, 2005a; Vuuren et al., 2012). |
